Instantly Step Up The Style In Your Home

Most people don't have the time, energy, or resources to makeover their entire home.

So I'm here to share with you 5 things you can do that will instantly step up the style in your home.

1. White Finishwork

Even without painting a wall in your home, adding or painting your existing trim/moulding white makes a HUGE difference. It gives your room a fresh, clean border and completely upgrades your home if you don't already have it.

I love this idea for adding a small strip of moulding above existing baseboards and painting in between to get the look of chunkier baseboards.

2. Down Pillow Inserts

Cheap, flat, polyester filled pillows, are exactly that... cheap and flat.

Down or down synthetics are the way to go. Always buy pillows that have a zipper cover and a removable insert. It looks better, you can remove the covers to wash or dry clean them, and when you want to change up your pillows just switch out the covers.

This website has awesome deals on down inserts. You can also use coupons at Hancock & Joann Fabrics on their pillow inserts. I've even bought super ugly pillows at TJMaxx just for the insert. This just depends how good of a deal it is for the whole pillow, but many times if you can find them on clearance, it's worth it.

I'm also loving this post about the art of pillow "chopping" :)

3. Clear The Clutter

If you have lots of momentos and collectibles, it doesn't mean you have to get rid of them, just invest in a nice display cabinet for them rather than lining them up on your mantle.

There is definitely a place for family heirlooms, gifts, collectibles, and little accessories, but don't let them take over your house.  An office bookcase, a couple shadow boxes, or a beautiful china or display cabinet will house them perfectly! I'm loving this affordable option from Ikea's new Stockholm Collection.

Clear clutter wherever you can. Places that tend to build up are kitchen and bathroom countertops, office and workspaces, mostly just any "task space." This is usually because of a lack of storage options to hide the ugly stuff we use everyday. Containers, baskets, and other organizers are your friend!

4. Get Rid of Your Torchiere Floor Lamp

This one is pretty simple...

If you have a floor lamp that looks like this. PLEASE sell it, burn it, get rid of it.
There are MUCH better floor lamp options that are just as affordable as these guys.

5. Add a Headboard and Bedskirt

If you don't have a lot of money to spend redoing your entire bedroom, adding these two things will take take it from dorm room to bedroom. There are so many inexpensive headboard options out there right now, and if you're a do-it-yourselfer, I'm sure you've seen all of the tutorials on Pinterest to make your own. Upholstered beds are all the rage right now, but there are also many other great finishes and materials out there. Just make sure you aren't flaunting the metal bed frame your mattress came with :)

I'm loving this striped headboard from Target. $449 for a king size is a steal of a deal!

Since it is only a headboard, you will also need a great bedskirt to complete the look and cover up that metal frame. Otherwise you can go with a bed that includes an upholstered frame and skip the skirt.
Either way you go, it will give your bedroom a much more finished look.
