Take it away Ashley...

Do you strive to make the most of your budget? Do you have a clear idea of what you want, but have a hard time finding just the right “something”?  Budget constraints and a unique vision are what keep me coming back for more…diy projects. Are you the same way?
Well, my hall bathroom makeover was no different. Bathrooms can be such a great space for going for a bold or adventurous look. However, I wanted to go for something visually interesting while still subtle and sophisticated.
After a little thinking, I finally decided to design a scalloped pattern to create a block print-like faux “wallpaper”. Scallops have been a hot trend lately, but I wanted to make sure the approach was timeless or at least have a little longevity. I hope the dot construction of the pattern will help with that endeavor.
So without further ado, here’s my tried and true way to create a handmade stencil of your very own:

Supply list:

1. Clear, stiff plastic stencil blanks or plastic covers sheets from your local copy center in their binding area

2. Your favorite painters tape

3. Black extra fine tip sharpie marker

5. Stencil cutting pen or craft knife (I bought mine at hobby lobby with a coupon about 2 years ago.)

6. A flat piece of glass (not pictured)
(think the type of glass you would find in frame…but it will get melty plastic on it, so once the glass is used, it's stencil glass for life, baby. Most craft & framing establishments carry replace frame glass, which is great option if you don’t want to pillage from your gallery wall.)

7. Your stencil design to trace (not pictured)

Directions:

1.     Identify or design the pattern for your stencil. Tip: You want to make sure it is tileable or has a repeat so that it will match up and be continuous when the stencil is applied to the surface.

2.     Secure the desired stencil pattern to a flat & smooth work surface using painters tape.

3.     Overlay and center stencil blank or plastic over the stencil pattern and secure with tape.

4.     Trace pattern onto stencil blank with a black extra fine tip sharpie marker.

5.     Once the stencil pattern has been completely traced onto the stencil blank, remove the stencil blank and re-tape on top of the sheet of glass. Tip: make sure that the glass is larger than your stencil blank so that your work surface does not get damaged during the next step.

6.     Use your stencil cutting tool or craft knife to remove the positive portion of the pattern (the area you want to show up on the finished product).

7.     Determine the starting point on your project and begin stenciling. Tip: make sure to keep the stencil straight and level. Try using a clip on level such as this

8.     Use a metallic sharpie (or paint) to “color” in the stencil pattern. Tip: if using a metallic sharpie pen, maintain a circular motion when coloring in the stencil so the metallic shimmer looks cleaner.

9.     Move stencil horizontally and then vertically until desired area is covered with your stencil pattern.

10.  Tada! Now you’re finished! Yay!

So, there you go! What do you think? Would you ever try making your own stencil? Do you have any other amazing stenciling tips that we should know about?
Thanks for inviting me to share my stencil tips, Lexie. Hope you all enjoyed the post.
