Window Treatments

Window treatments can really add the finishing touch to a room. Especially a large room with a lot of bare wall space even with artwork hung. But, just like most things in design, you have to get it just right.
Window treatments that aren't the right size or length or are hung wrong can just as easily take away from the beauty of the room.

Here are my top 10 tips for window treatments:

1) Measure, measure, measure.

A small mistake in measurements can really make or break your window treatments.

2) If curtains or drapes are your window treatment of choice, they should at least touch the ground.

For more formal look, they can even billow at the floor a bit.

3) Hang your rod wider than the window so that when pulled back, your window treatments aren't covering up the window, they are actually covering up the wall.

4) Your curtain rod should be hung almost to the ceiling.

Never hang it right above the window. You aren't doing your window justice! By hanging it higher and wider you're actually making your windows look larger.

5) 99% of the time pre-made curtain panels aren't going to work on your windows.

The majority of panels that you find at stores really aren't long enough. Some online companies sell longer lengths, but it's better to make the curtains to fit the rod rather than move the rod to fit the curtains if that makes sense.

6) Patterned and/or colorful window treatments can be a fun statement piece in a room, but even solid window treatments that are similar to your wall color can add just the right amount of texture and movement to a room.

7) If you're willing to do a little sewing yourself, adding a colorblock of solid fabric to the bottom of a shorter panel can be a fun look and gives you the length you need.
Also, if you do happen upon some extra long pre-made panels, you can always hem them to the right length.

8) If you have a bay window, which can be tricky, this article has great tips on how to add window treatments.

 9) Roman shades are one of my favorite window treatments. They work great when you don't have the wall space for curtains or if you have a windowseat or other piece of furniture under your window. They also work well for kitchens and bathrooms.

10) If you're in the market for window treatments, Etsy is a great place to find shops that make custom window treatments. This Etsy shop has great fabric choices.

  1. “Window treatments can really add the finishing touch to a room.” – I agree. Window treatment, however, can make or break the appeal of a room. It is important you consider the guidelines for choosing the proper type of window treatment. Window length, width, location are just some of the areas you need to keep in mind. Following tips, or having inspirations like these, will certainly make it easier for you to decide. >> Li Ayers @ Renewal by Andersen®
