Dining Chair Revamp

The summer before we moved to Des Moines I found these great chairs at the DI (Deseret Industries if you're not a Utah native ) for $5 a piece! Well they were great when I was finished with them. The caning on the backs was actually faux so there were no breaks or holes in it and all of the chairs still had sturdy legs. They just needed a good scrub down, paint job, and reupholstered seats. (Those orange velvet seats were DISGUSTING) Every time I get knee deep in a project like this I ask myself what was I thinking, until I see the finished product. It's well worth it to have something unique in your home.  I used oil based paint, which I highly recommend if you ever paint furniture. It's messy and sometimes a pain in the butt, but the end result is worth it.  Natalie Cox, of the blog Natty by Design, has some great tips here about painting furniture.  She is constantly refinishing pieces and actually sells them as well, go here to see some of her work. ...

How To Fill The BBW

What is the BBW? It's the Big Blank Wall that nobody seems to know what to do with, particularly in the living or family room. The BBW is especially common if you live in an apartment, duplex, or condo because you most likely share a wall with someone and thus you have at least one big wall with no windows. Well I'm here today to give you a few tips to help you with your BBW. ONE// Go big or go home. The scale of what you hang on a big wall makes all the difference. If you're doing a gallery wall, it's better to have several pretty oversized pieces rather than a ton of little ones. TWO// Sometimes splitting the wall up into sections makes it easier. That can be visually with your furniture placement or with your paint. THREE// Think about adding furniture that has a little height, such as book cases, or architectural features along the wall to break it up. FOUR// If you're just hanging one large piece of art, do not compensate for the large w...

Just What I Needed

Just wanted to share. This is exactly what I needed to read today and I hope any of you who are going through the same thing will find comfort in it as well.  I'm also really loving this quote by Richard G. Scott- "Just when all seems to be going right, challenges often come in multiple doses applied simultaneously. When those trials are not consequences of your disobedience, they are evidence that The Lord feels you are prepared to grow more. He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding, and compassion which polish you for your everlasting benefit. To get you from where you are to where He wants you to be requires a lot of stretching, and that generally entails discomfort and pain..."

Parenting & Polka Dots

Many bloggers take the weekend off, but I would still like to do a Saturday post, so I've decided that this will be my "daily life" post. Books, fashion, recipes, fitness, etc. Stay tuned! No I am not a parent yet, but I heard about the book Bringing up Bebe on a morning talk show and was very intrigued by it.  It's written by Pamela Druckerman, an American woman living in Paris. It's all about the philosophies of French parenting. She talks about why their children aren't picky eaters and why they don't interrupt their parents, and other such concepts that I think many parents have a hard time with.  Now, she says of course not all parents in France are great parents and they don't all parent the same way, but overall they have a certain "way" about it that greatly differs from many American families. So to get a little taste of the book I have started reading a condensed version that she wrote called Bebe Day by Day . It...

World Market

World Market has become one of my favorite places to shop for inexpensive home decor. I don't think I would ever buy a sofa or bed from them for quality purposes, but they have great accent pieces, curtains, rugs, dishes, side chairs, and accessories.  If you love Anthropologie, then you should check it out. I've found things there that are almost identical to Anthro finds, especially their bathroom decor.  They also have cowhide rugs at a good price, which are really popular in design right now and look awesome layered over another rug.  These are a few of my favorite pieces right now, including a few from their new Spring Line. Tamara Sculpted Towel   (very similar to the Perpetual Blooms Towel at Anthro but half the price) Honeycomb Chandelier  Emma Tufted Chairs (Set of 2) Gemma Rug Clear Glass Table Lamp Base Suzani Embroidered Throw Pillow Everett Foyer Table Chevron Chenille Bath Mat...

Bed Pillows. Keep it Simple.

Ever wondered how to arrange pillows on your bed?  It can be a real science, and sometimes I think people (even designers) go a little bit overboard.  I've come up with a diagram of my favorite ways to arrange pillows as well as a few inspiration pics.  I'm also a big proponent of being able to leave the pillows you actual sleep with on your bed when you make it. If you're like me, I don't find it very convenient to have to find a place to hide out my pillows. Just make sure the pillows you sleep with are in nice pillowcases, not your Disney sheets. I've also included some diagrams that other designers have come up with. Some of them are a little complex and overdone, but they at least give you a method to the madness.  Enjoy!  via DesignWotcha via Marissa Waddell Interiors These inspiration pics and their links, as well as many other examples, can be found on my  Bedroom Pinterest Board . ...
