Who I Learned It All From

My parents had their house up for sale for a few months (they have since decided the time isn't right to sell), but one couple who came through the house asked who decorated it. The realtor told them that it was the homeowner. They were so impressed and thought that a professional decorator had been hired to do it. Hearing this was no surprise to me. I learned much of what I know about design from my mother. As you can see in the above video she could definitely make a profession out of it.

A Dangerous Place

Target is a dangerous place. I dare you to try and  walk out of there without something in your hands. It's pretty much impossible.  Here are a few fun finds I saw while I was there last week... A Cheery DIY

Before we headed out of town for Spring Break, I wanted to drop by a little something "Springy" to my new visiting teaching ladies. I have really been loving this quote that Erin, from Candy Kirby Designs , posted on her Instagram feed.  So I decided this was a great thought to pass on. Sorry, but I get a little bored with the VT messages that are ALWAYS about visiting teaching. Is it just me?  So here is a little DIY that you can try out yourself and gift to someone needing a pick me up :)  By the way, Trader Joe's has the most amazing selection of Spring flowers right now. It was a good thing I was going out of town in 3 days or I may have bought way too many. Cut and potted hydrangeas, ranunculus, daffodils, tulips, and hyacinth galore! When we get back from Spring Break I may just have to head back over there. For now, I made it out with the 2 potted daffodils I needed for my project.  Here's what you'll need... ONE . potted...

What To Do If You're A Plant Killer

I highly recommend incorporating live plants and flowers in your home. They improve air quality, have been shown to have calming and stress reducing effects, and the right plants and containers really elevate the look of your home.  via I will ALWAYS try to talk someone into putting live plants in their home first because they make such a difference. But if you really aren't fond of the maintenance they require, I've put together some options for you plant killers. (Don't worry, I used to be a plant killer too)  Some of my favorite alternatives are preserved mosses and boxwood , pressed leaves , and faux succulents.  Let me just say that I HATE silk plants and flowers, but succulents are the one faux plant I think you can get away with because the real think has such a waxy texture to begin with. Terrariums are really popular right now, and you can create some fun ones with moss and faux succulents.   I have seen a pretty good lo...

Illume Gowns

Illume Gowns , is a wedding line started by the wonderful Sara Sandberg. She's married to my husband's cousin and she has amazing style. She even made her own wedding dress. The fabrics are gorgeous and the prices are amazing for the quality of these gowns. I chose my 2 favorites, but head over and check them all out. They are to die for! She also has a line of jackets that are equally amazing.  If you know anyone getting married, definitely send them her way! Esther LOVE that bow detail! Interior Paint Selection

Choosing the right interior paint color can be one of the hardest things for people without an art or design background, and even for those of us who do, it can be a challenge.  So I'm here to give you my best tips, but before I do, there's a few color terms you need to know. So my first question is, have you ever seen the acronym "LRV" on the back of your paint chip? LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value.  LRV is a measurement that tells you how much light a color reflects. LRV runs on a scale from 0% to 100%. Zero being absolute black and 100% being a perfectly reflective white, although an absolute black or perfectly reflecting white do not exist in our everyday terms.  Around 50-60% LRV is said to be optimal for interior paint. If you choose a lower LRV your room will seem much darker and smaller. If you choose a high LRV you may be "blinded by the light". But like everything else in design, sometimes if you break the rules you can sti...

Saturday Randoms

Have you seen this movie yet? Landon and I went to see it last weekend, mostly because it's basically the only movie out that isn't rated R. I was pleasantly surprised and Landon even liked it. It was probably one of my favorites of the Nicholas Sparks' movies.  My week via Instagram... FINALLY resurrected the paints. I need to do it more often. Decorating for Spring. Hoping it will be here soon! I snatched up those pants seen in this post , for our Spring Break trip to Utah/Vegas. Happy weekend to you all!

DIY Antler Shed

I saw these awesome antler sheds on Brickyard Buffalo the other day and it inspired me to do something with my own that I stole from my parents' garage when we moved :)  So I made a little tutorial for you in case you want to try it out as well!  I didn't use any sort of adhesive when doing this project, so I can always take it off or switch up the colors in the future. As I was wrapping, I just made sure the loose end got wrapped up into the embroidery floss. You could also use yarn for this project. If you don't have a dad or brother who has a garage full of these babies, you can buy them here . Otherwise you can head over to my parents' house, I'm sure my dad will sell you one :)

In-Home Consultations

I'm headed to Utah and will be doing in-home consultations from March 25-28th! I'm yours for 2 hours to help with whatever you want! If you have a small project that you would like me to help you actually shop for, I can definitely do that as well. The cost will still be $100 for a consultation at your home and then $75/hr for the time I spend shopping for you.  Now for the best part of this deal... If you refer a friend to me and they set up a consultation as well, you will receive 50% off your own consultation! Email me at lexiesandberg@gmail.com to set up a time that works for you!  I'm only in town for 4 days so I am limited to 3 consultations per day and 2-3 clients that I can shop for. *payment due at the end of your consultation *time slots are on a fi...

Kitchen Storage & Design

Sometimes the kitchen is the last place we think about in terms of interior design, but I think it is where a designer's skills are truly put to the test. That's the difference between a decorator and a designer, being able to actual design a functional space not just make it pretty. In a kitchen it's all about function and then about beauty in my opinion. There are many other areas in the home where I am willing to sacrifice function for beauty, but not in the kitchen. I recently picked up the January/February 2013 edition of Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen + Bath Ideas. It has some great ideas for kitchen design whether you're remodeling or just trying to make your kitchen more functional as is. (I would highly recommend purchasing this magazine! It's on shelves until March 11 so hurry fast!) I especially love the article on page 22 about Kitchen Storage. My favorite quote is from Janice Patte, a certified kitchen designer in Indianapolis. She sa...

Books & Birthdays

I could have very easily read this book in a day, but I stretched it out over this week and finished yesterday. I'm pretty sure it is one of the best books I have ever read.  Stephanie Nielson has such a great message to share that everyone needs to hear. One of my favorite quotes from the book is actually by Elder Holland who met with her after the accident. He said, "We look for Christ's scars because they are evidence of what He did for us. They'll be the first things He shows us when we see Him again. Your scars tell a story, too. Although they may not make you feel attractive, they are a witness of a miracle, that God blessed you to live, and that you have accomplished very difficult things." Most of us don't have scars that are obvious to the world, but I think this can apply to scars that lay on our hearts as well.   This is a book that everyone should read! Such a great story of hope and the true meaning of happiness. Buy It Here ...

DIY Shelf Backing

The first thing I noticed when we moved into our condo was the built in bookshelf next to the fireplace. I have always wanted a bookshelf to play around with design wise. Only downside is that all of the woodwork in our condo is ugly yellow-orange stained oak.  I thought maybe I would at least paint the fireplace mantle and the bookshelf white while we were here, but now that we only have 10 months left I don't think its worth the time.  So my next idea was to at least cover some foam core with fabric and put it in the back of the bookshelf.  Those of you who have used foam core know that it can be pretty pricey especially for as much as I would need, plus the cost of decorator fabric. Well I just happened to come across this awesome shelf liner paper at TJMAXX for $5.99! I bought 2 packs just in case and was glad I did. I wouldn't have needed it had I not messed up one of the sheets :S Oh well.  Luckily the shelves are removable, so I took them all ...
